Carvill family papers, 1820-1933.

This collection is a rich source of information about John Carvill of Carvill Brothers, shipowners and merchants in Newry, County Down, Ireland in the six decades spanning the turn of the nineteenth century. The collection consists of letter books predominantly documenting his business and finances, as well as land (1821-1883) and legal documents of Patrick George Carvill, insurance papers, stock purchases, and oversize ship insurance papers. Letters in the 1903-1914 letterbook include personal as well as business letters which offer information about the Carvill family, schooling of Ruth Carvill, construction of a home on Downshire Road, Newry, land transactions, and letters to family and friends giving avuncular advice about schooling and character, and occasionally politics.
